Symantec LiveUpdate freeze on log-in

Posted at 12:22:19 pm

The Symantec LiveUpdate app freezes on log-in every day on my Mac. I have to force-quit it daily. I can then run the app and everything works as expected.

It's a universal app, so I shouldn't need Rosetta support enabled. I set up a monthly schedule in Symantec Scheduler, but LiveUpdate still runs daily. I only find a couple of useful entries in the log:

Feb 10 01:01:07 austxml-41pl64b LiveUpdate[3053]: 3891612: (connectAndCheck) Untrusted apps are not allowed to connect to or launch Window Server before login.
Feb 10 01:01:07 austxml-41pl64b /Applications/Symantec Solutions/LiveUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS/LiveUpdate[3053]: _RegisterApplication(), FAILED TO establish the default connection to the WindowServer, _CGSDefaultConnection() is NULL.

Any suggestions?

After trying everything, including rolling back to my earliest system snapshot and even reinstalling Acrobat, I still continue to get this error when attempting to post a Shared Review to a WebDAV server using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. It occurs immediately after the step when you choose reviewers. I've tried with 9.0 as well as with the latest updates, no change.

Running Windows XP Pro SP3 via VMWare Fusion 3 on a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8

Any suggestions?

Quicksilver G4 Insomniac

Posted at 04:06:43 pm

I have a nice older Quicksilver G4 that I re-appropriated as a learning tool for my children. I've adjusted the sleep settings a few times, but it will not automatically sleep. It will sleep if I manually choose "Sleep" from the Apple drop-down menu. Upon waking, the trouble begins. It tends to have issues related to the NIC, resulting in loss of network connection. Occasionally OS X will simply freeze.

I've installed the latest updates with no changes. I've also removed any extra hardware, down to just the basics. While sleeping, I will sometimes flip the KVM switch over to my MacBook, though the sleep issue occurs even if I don't do this.

Any suggestions?

On a few Macs, I've been having issues with Adobe Bridge CS3 crashing when browsing to folders that contain EPS files, both on AFP servers and local drives.

I've been focusing my attention on a specific G5 Power Mac running 10.5.8 and Creative Suite CS3, though both Intel and PPC Macs have been affected. I've run Disk Utility permission repairs, run hardware diagnostics, run OS X and Adobe software updates, all to no avail. The issue actually expanded to a handful of other Macs with no explanation.

Recently, I stumbled upon a site which yielded a possible culprit. I found a comment posted on a blog with a possible solution. It seems that at times, Symantec AntiVirus can cause Adobe Bridge to crash. After some testing, I found that disabling the Auto-Protect feature alleviated the issue under 10.4 and 10.5.

After a bit more research, I've found that the EPS parser plug-in for Bridge is not exactly reliable and stable. Removing it gives SAV the ability to run with Auto-Protect enabled. The down-side is that EPS files will not have thumbnail previews in Bridge unless saved as such.

To remove the plug-in, delete the following file. They will not have thumbnails unless they have been saved as such.

/Applications/Adobe Bridge CS3/Plug-Ins/EPS Parser.plugin

Apple's new tablet device, the iPad

Posted at 12:19:17 pm

Apple finally introduced their new tablet device today. It is based upon the iPhone, so it looks like you'll need to hold on to your desktop or laptop for a bit longer. It's more functional than an iPhone or iPod Touch, but not a full computer like your Mac. It sits nicely between the two devices. Looks like a nice all around device for home use for everything from reading your daily paper and books to watching movies, listening to music, browsing the Web and reading email.

They will be available from Apple beginning in March for $499-829, depending on the model.

Well, it could have been worse:
